NORMAN, Oklahoma – After winning the annual R&A Foundation Scholars Tournament at St Andrews Golf Club Tuesday, 23-year-old Mathias Eggenberger of Austria has earned an spot on the European Team for the 2015 Palmer Cup. The annual Ryder Cup-style collegiate golf tournament will take place June 12-14 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, IL.
Eggenberger plays collegiate golf at Sterling University in Scotland under Head Coach, Dean Robertson. Robertson was the Head Coach of Team Europe in both the 2009 and 2010 Palmer Cups. The R&A Foundation Scholars Tournament takes place each year in St Andrews and features student golfers who receive financial assistance from The R&A to enable them to continue to play competitive golf while completing their studies. “The support that we get (as R&A Scholars) is unbelievable,” said Eggenberger after his win. “This tournament gives us a chance to play in the Palmer Cup, and that doesn’t happen that often so if you have the chance you have to take it.”
An international field of 60 student golfers took to the Eden Course in St Andrews for 18 holes on Monday afternoon before moving to the Castle Course for the final round on Tuesday. The remainder of the teams will be announced next week. The tournament is open to the public with free admission and free parking. Spectators will also have the opportunity to walk the fairways with the players during the event.
