The SSK, short for Super Sport Kurz (German for “Short”), were the last cars designed by Ferdinand Porsche before he left to start his own company. It was the fastest car of its day, with a top speed of 120 mph. Naturally, it was used for racing. SSKs were a great favorite of legendary Grand Prix racing driver Rudolf Caracciola and served as the winning car in eight major races across the world from 1929-1931. The car was so memorable that it was one of the 26 models nominated for the “Car of the Century” award, despite only being produced for four years (1928-1932).
Only 40 SSKs were ever produced, and only four or five are said to remain after most got destroyed during races, making it one of the rarest cars in the world. They easily go for over $7.5 million at auction.
This SSK is a replica built in 1990. It is one of two replicas in the car museum, the other being the 1966 Ford Shelby Cobra Mark III.
