The Mercedes Benz 300 SL started life as a race car in 1952 but was toned down for consumer production in 1954. Despite being made in Germany, the car was introduced at the New York Auto Show and instantly became popular with the sporty American elite. It stood out with its unique gullwing doors, production fuel injection, and, of course, speed, topping out at 160 mph. A convertible version, known as a roadster, was put into production after the gullwing’s run ended. From 1957-1963, 1,858 roadsters were produced.

This 1961 Mercedes Benz 300 SL Roadster is one of Mr. Rich’s favorite cars in the entire museum, even though it is not as rare as the gullwing. Why? Because it is the first and only car Mr. Rich has ever personally restored. A lot of hard work goes into restoring cars, so there is no car in the museum that Mr. Rich know better than this one!
