The Mercedes Benz SLS AMG is the modern-day spiritual successor to the iconic 300SL Gullwing that was produced in the late 50s and early 60s. This inspiration is best highlighted by the car’s gull-wing doors that swing open upwards. It is also the first Mercedes Benz automobile designed and built from scratch entirely by Mercedes-AMG GmbH, a high-performance subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz AG.
SLS stands for ‘Super Leicht Sport’ (Super Light Sport), the perfect name for a sporty track-oriented car that is much lighter than its sister car, the Mercedes Benz SL. Its stunning good looks have earned it numerous design awards when it came out in 2010. It wasn’t sold in the United States until 2011. Production ended shortly after in 2014 with a total of 2,734 SLS AMGs sold in the U.S., including both Gullwings and roadsters.
