The Lamborghini Diablo carries on Lamborghini’s long-standing tradition of naming its cars after fighting bulls. Diablo was a fearsome bull, raised and fought by the Duke of Veragua in the 19th century. The Lamborghini Diablo lives up to its name in more ways than one. It is faster than the devil, being the first production Lamborghini capable of top speeds above 200 mph and going from 0-30 mph in 1.8 seconds. From 1990 until 2001, this was the ‘it’ car of the era.
The Diablo was conceptualized in 1985 as a replacement for the Countach, Lamborghini’s flagship sports car. Its development was mired by a change in Lamborghini’s ownership though, which resulted in disagreements over its initial design—Chrysler Corporation did not like Italian car designer Marcello Gandini’s sharp edges and corners, so they smoothed everything out, leaving Gandini famously unimpressed.
Around 900 Lamborghini Diablos were produced. Though there were many variants, this 1991 Lamborghini Diablo is an original, equipped with fully adjustable seats and steering wheel, electric windows, and an Alpine stereo system.
