MG is a British automotive marque founded by Cecil Kimber in the 1920s. The ‘MG’ comes from Morris Garages, a car dealership owned by English motor manufacturer William Morris that sold Morris Motors Limited cars. Morris Garages hired Kimber to be its sales manager in 1921. To increase sales, Kimber modified the cars being sold, creating the first MGs. These ‘Kimber Specials’ proved to be so popular that Kimber’s work was split off to form The M.G. Car Company, or MG for short.
Unfortunately, Kimber and Morris had a falling out, with Kimber leaving MG in 1941. MG was eventually absorbed into the British Motor Corporation (BMC) in 1952, a merger of Morris Motors Limited and The Austin Motor Company Limited.
It was Mr. Rich’s Uncle Al’s 1953 MG Roadster (also in the car museum) that inspired Mr. Rich to begin collecting cars in the first place, so he decided to purchase his own MG Roadster as a companion car. Not only is it red, Mr. Rich’s favorite color, but it was also from the same year MG merged with BMC, so it is a piece of automotive history.
