Robby Shelton Claims 113th Western Amateur Medalist Honors

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. (Aug. 6, 2015) … Robby Shelton of Wilmer, Alabama earned medalist honors Thursday at the 113th Western Amateur following an 11-under par performance in stroke play this week at Rich Harest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois.

A highly decorated junior at the University of Alabama, Shelton was tied for seventh heading into the fourth round before firing a 5-under 67 to join the likes of Bobby Jones, Chick Evans and other of the game’s greats as medalist at the Western Amateur. Shelton’s final round was his best of the week and included five birdies and an eagle.

Danielson Takes Lead after Round 3

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. (Aug. 6, 2015) … Charlie Danielson of Osceola, Wisconsin, shot a 1-under 71 to claim the third round lead Thursday at the 2015 Western Amateur at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois.

Danielson, a senior at the University of Illinois, was one stroke back of leader Dawson Armstrong when the round began and recovered from a triple bogey on No. 10 to post the third’s second-lowest score.

Dawson Armstrong Claims One Stroke Lead

Sugar Grove, Illinois (August 5, 2015) … About halfway through a second consecutive subpar round at Rich Harvest Farms on Wednesday, Dawson Armstrong shifted his focus from his own fate at the 2015 Western Amateur to that of his playing partner — highly-touted, Florida commit Sam Horsfield, who was on the verge of missing Wednesday’s 36-hole cut.

Taylor Funk eyes spot in Western Amateur Sweet 16

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. (Aug. 6, 2015) … PGA TOUR veteran Fred Funk won’t be able to come to Rich Harvest Farms today to watch his son, Taylor, try to qualify for this year’s Sweet 16 match play segment of the Western Amateur in Sugar Grove, Illinois.

Fred will be busy playing at the Champions Tour’s Shaw Charity Classic in Calgary.

“Hopefully, he can get a win and I can get a win, and have a Funk duo there,” Taylor said Wednesday after shooting a 5-under 67, which put him at 9-under par, two shots behind leader Dawson Armstrong.

Texas’ Funk leads the 113th Western Amateur & Wise Breaks Course Record

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. (Aug. 4, 2015) … With five Texas Longhorns in the field, many might have guessed that a player in burnt orange would at one point lead the 2015 Western Amateur but they might not have predicted that someone would be Taylor Funk, a 19-year-old sophomore from Ponte Vedre, Florida.

Perhaps less talked about than his teammates — who include defending Western Amateur champion Beau Hossler and 2015 Phil Mickelson Outstanding Freshman of the Year Award winner Scottie Scheffler — Funk followed up an opening round 4-under 68 with a 5-under 67 on Wednesday and claimed sole possession of the second round lead.

 – Two 19-year-olds tied the competitive course record Tuesday at Rich Harvest Farms when they shot 5-under par 67s in the opening round of the 113th Western Amateur in Sugar Grove, Illinois.

On a perfect, high-sky, low-wind, summer day, Dawson Armstrong, of Nashville, and Jose Mendez, of Costa Rica, tied the course record held jointly by Michael Thompson (2007), Corey Conners (2012) and Greg Eason (2013).

2015 Western Amateur Field Announced

Sugar Grove, IL – Coming off his third U.S. Open appearance last month, 20-year-old Beau Hossler will defend his title at the 113th Western Amateur against an international field of 155 other elite amateur golfers, Aug. 3-8, at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.

Hossler, a junior at Texas, will have to outplay and outlast the likes of NCAA Division I Champion Bryson DeChambeau, also a U.S. Open contestant, and Hunter Stewart, the world’s top-ranked amateur, SEC Player of the Year and recent winner of the Northeast Amateur.
